A Revolution in Four-Part
Harmony
Kronologisk dokumentar
om musikkens rolle i Sør-Afrikas
motstandskamp og frigjøringshistorie.
Regissør: Lee
Hirsch (USA) – År:
2002 – Tid: 1 t,
48 min
Through a chronological
history of the South African
liberation struggle, this
documentary cites examples
of the way that music
was used in the fight
for freedom. Songs united
those who were being oppressed
and gave those fighting
a way to express their
plight. The music consoled
those incarcerated, and
created an effective underground
form of communication
inside the prisons. |

LUMUMBA
Sterk
film om Congos første
statsleder – og
pan-afrikanske helt,
Patrice Lumumba, som
brutalt ble myrdet av
vestlige myndigheter.
Regissør:
Raoul Peck (Haiti) –
År: 2000 –
Tid: 1 t, 55 min
The true
story of the rise to
power and brutal assassination
of the formerly vilified
and later redeemed leader
of the independent Congo,
Patrice Lumumba. Using
newly discovered historical
evidence, Haitian-born
and later Congo-
raised writer and director
Raoul Peck renders an
emotional and tautly
woven account of the
mail clerk and beer
salesman with a flair
for oratory and an uncompromising
belief in the capacity
of his homeland to build
a prosperous nation
independent of its former
Belgium overlords. Lumumba
emerges here
as the heroic sacrificial
lamb dubiously portrayed
by the international
media
and led to slaughter
by commercial and political
interests in Belgium,
the
United States, the international
community, and Lumumba's
own administration;
a true story of political
intrigue and murder
where political entities,
captains of commerce,
and the military dovetail
in their quest for economic
and political hegemony |

A self-absorbed Black
American fashion model
on a photo shoot in
Africa is spiritually
transported back to
a plantation in the
West Indies where she
experiences first-hand
the physical and psychic
horrors of chattel slavery,
and eventually the redemptive
power of community and
rebellion as she becomes
a member of a freedom-seeking
Maroon colony.
SANKOFA is an Akan
word that means, one
must return to the past
in order to move forward.
Mona, a contemporary
model, is possessed
by spirits lingering
in the Cape Coast Castle
in Ghana and travels
to the past, where,
as a house servant called
Shola she is constantly
abused by the slave
master. Nunu, an African-born
field hand, and Shango,
Sholas West Indian Lover,
continuously rebel against
the slave system. For
Nunu this means direct
conflict with her son,
a mulatto benefitting
from the system as a
head slave. Inspired
by Nunu and Shangos
determination to defy
the system, Shola finally
takes her fate into
her own hands.
